Spring Clean Your Security: What a Professional Survey Can Tell You About Your Home
A guide for homeowners across the Thames Valley
Published by Bourne End & Henley Security Systems
Every spring, the same jobs come around. The garden gets its first proper attention since autumn, the windows get cleaned, and the list of odd jobs that built up over winter finally gets tackled. But there is one thing most homeowners never think to add to that list: a proper look at their home security.
It is easy to understand why. If nothing has gone wrong, there is no trigger to question it.
The trouble is, “seems fine” and “is fine” are not the same thing. And the gap between the two is exactly what a professional security survey is designed to find.
At Bourne End and Henley Security Systems, we have been surveying homes across the Thames Valley for over 25 years. We are a local company, based at the Harleyford Estate near Marlow.
The issues that come up time and again
No two properties are identical, but the same problems appear with remarkable consistency.
Alarm systems are another consistent finding. Many homes in the area have systems that were installed a decade or more ago and have not been serviced since. Sensors get painted over during decorating. Rooms get reconfigured, loft conversions added, or conservatories built, and the alarm zones are never updated to match. The panel by the front door gives a reassuring beep every time you set it, but the coverage behind it may bear no resemblance to the property as it exists today.
CCTV has become far more common in residential properties, but installation quality varies enormously. We frequently find cameras mounted too high to capture a usable facial image, lenses obscured by cobwebs or overhanging foliage, and recording systems that reached capacity months ago and simply stopped storing footage without alerting anyone. We also find cameras angled in ways that inadvertently cover a neighbour’s garden or driveway, raising privacy concerns most homeowners had not considered.
Finally, the property itself. Larger gardens, mature hedging, and detached outbuildings are part of what makes Thames Valley properties so attractive, but they also create cover and access points that a smaller, more enclosed property would not have. An overgrown boundary hedge that screens you from the road also screens an intruder from view. A garden shed against a boundary wall or wheelie bins beside a side gate provide a step up to a first-floor window. A surveyor spots these in the first thirty seconds. A homeowner has looked at them every day for years without seeing them differently.
Why spring?
As the days get longer, routines change. Windows stay open, doors get left unlocked while you are in the garden, and the house is empty more often. These are the conditions that create opportunities for opportunistic crime, and they build steadily from spring through to late summer. A survey now gives you time to address whatever it finds before those risks peak.
What a BEHSS survey looks like
Our surveys are carried out by a qualified surveyor. They walk your property inside and out, assessing every entry point, every boundary, every system and every environmental factor that could affect your security.
You receive an honest assessment. If your setup is solid, we will say so. If there are weaknesses, we will explain what they are, why they matter, and what the options are. You will get a clear picture of cost with no pressure to commit.
Insurance and accreditation
We are SSAIB accredited, which means our installations and maintenance are independently inspected and verified. Alarm systems installed by an SSAIB-registered company are recognised by insurers and police, and may qualify you for reduced premiums. It is worth checking your policy.
Book a free survey
If your home security has not been professionally reviewed in the last few years, this spring is a good time to change that. Our surveys are free, carry no obligation, and take the guesswork out of whether your home is as well protected as you think.
